Description: Managing anticoagulant therapy has always been a delicate balancing act between thrombus and hemorrhage. Between 2010 and 2012, new options (direct thrombin inhibitor and new direct Factor Xa inhibitors) became available. This Internet activity seeks to provide risk management suggestions for physicians who are considering their options for anticoagulation therapy for their patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. Data from phase III clinical trials and recommendations from medical specialty organizations will be reviewed to identify considerations in prescribing new and old anticoagulants to patients.
Learning Objectives: Upon successful completion, participants should be able to: 1. Describe the benefits and risks of dabigatran and rivaroxaban. 2. Define noninferiority trials and explain their limitations. 3. State existing professional recommendations about what to do with patients who are stable on warfarin and why. 4. Identify strategies to minimize risks associated with implementing a new anticoagulant therapy option in clinical practice.
Learning Assessment: There will be a post test for this activity with a minimum performance requirement of 4 out of 5 correct answers.
