Description

Neurosurgeons shoulder the burden of high-risk exposure for professional liability claims. Analysis of claims can help neurosurgeons to improve patient safety and reduce liability risk. The top categories of allegations of neurosurgery claims are procedural error (also known as improper performance of a procedure), diagnostic errors, management of surgical patients, and wrong site/side/patient. Diagnostic and procedural error will be discussed in this first part of a two-part series.

Learning Outcomes/Objectives

Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  1. Analyze their own practices to identify areas that would benefit from process improvements.
  2. Review critical steps and concerns for a procedure with the surgical team before surgery.
