Description

Case Study #21 and #22 address monitoring laboring patients and their fetuses. Prolonged periods of uninterpretable or absent fetal heart rate data (FHR) or uterine contraction (UC) data on the EFM strip can lead to legal complications. Case study #21 discusses how failing to monitor the FHR/UC data violates the standard of care for the reasonably prudent obstetrical caregiver and offers solutions to prevent it. Case study #22 outlines strategies for providers and hospitals on how to safely adopt intermittent auscultation (IA) into clinical practice. There is a current disconnect between scientific evidence that supports the use of intermittent auscultation (IA) in low-risk pregnant patients and the use of IA in clinical practice. All professional perinatal organizations encourage the universal adoption of IA as part of a “non-interventional” care model for low-risk obstetric patients. 

Learning Outcomes/Objectives

Upon completion, participants should be able to:

  1. List three maternal, fetal, or other causes of continuous electronic fetal monitoring (CEFM) data omission.
  2. Adopt 2 clinical strategies to limit CEFM data omission and failure to monitor malpractice allegations.
  3. List three benefits and limitations of intermittent auscultation (IA) and continuous electronic fetal monitoring (CEFM).
  4. Analyze a case study and identify two risks associated with the administration of IA in the low-risk population.
  5. Adopt three risk reduction strategies into your clinical practice when utilizing IA.
